Fan de Connolly!

I tried and gave up。 Junk, gratuitous inserts that only distract。

Supernatural tinges in a Parker mystery。

The occult angle surprised me, but a consistently compelling story - well done!

The good: this was an interesting story, with compelling characters and a plot that makes you want to keep reading。The bad: the author suffers (although not as greatly) from what caused me to place Norman Rush's "Mating" as the one and only book in my discarded pile: an incessant need to show off his vocabulary, as if the writing alone would not suffice without employing a thesaurus。 The effect is that the reader is actually distracted from the plot line and left wondering what exactly the autho The good: this was an interesting story, with compelling characters and a plot that makes you want to keep reading。The bad: the author suffers (although not as greatly) from what caused me to place Norman Rush's "Mating" as the one and only book in my discarded pile: an incessant need to show off his vocabulary, as if the writing alone would not suffice without employing a thesaurus。 The effect is that the reader is actually distracted from the plot line and left wondering what exactly the author is trying to prove。 At times, while reading this book, you really wish the author would get out of his own way。 。。。more

Maybe it is unfair of me to rate this book since the volume I read was an Advance Reader's Copy。 Perhaps。 Certainly, there were enough errors, some egregious, which I trust were corrected in the official published edition。 Maybe some of the problems were ameliorated。 To begin with, Mr。 Connolly can be a brilliant prose stylist and acute plotter。 Here we have the feeling he is mailing it in。 Or perhaps plunging ahead without a good grasp of the material。 Without doubt, for my taste, he has slippe Maybe it is unfair of me to rate this book since the volume I read was an Advance Reader's Copy。 Perhaps。 Certainly, there were enough errors, some egregious, which I trust were corrected in the official published edition。 Maybe some of the problems were ameliorated。 To begin with, Mr。 Connolly can be a brilliant prose stylist and acute plotter。 Here we have the feeling he is mailing it in。 Or perhaps plunging ahead without a good grasp of the material。 Without doubt, for my taste, he has slipped over the line into the realm of too much woo-woo-weird stuff while letting his characters lose a step in performance。 I was wholly unimpressed with both Parker and Louis as well as the prognosticating abilities of an early victim。 Yes, there may be more chances in future books, but none of us are guaranteed the time to read or to write。 。。。more

I have been reading this series from the beginning, so possibly around 20 years of stories involving Charlie, Louis, Angel etc。 They are like family, or at the very least dearest friends。 I love Louis and Angel very much, I love the acceptance they get from Charlie。 But one of the things I love most is Mr Connolly's story telling abilities。 I love that so the bad guys have something about them, some sort of physical malady。 The evil woman in this story is Pallida Mors, who reeks both internally I have been reading this series from the beginning, so possibly around 20 years of stories involving Charlie, Louis, Angel etc。 They are like family, or at the very least dearest friends。 I love Louis and Angel very much, I love the acceptance they get from Charlie。 But one of the things I love most is Mr Connolly's story telling abilities。 I love that so the bad guys have something about them, some sort of physical malady。 The evil woman in this story is Pallida Mors, who reeks both internally and externally of some rancid festering death ball。 If memory serves correctly, all of his bad guys (and gals) have this, something wrong to outwardly portrait their inner rottenness。 As far as story line go this one, I feel was a great one。 His pacing and plots are always on point, it will really be a sad day when I hear about this series coming to an end。 Until then, bring it on Mr。 Connolly。。。。 Bring it on。 😁 。。。more

Not enough action, too many moving parts, old gods and new gods, dead people talking。。。I quit half way through。

I came late to this series and have only read three books so far。 But what a great series。 Loving Charlie Parker。

2。8⭐It started out really strong until it got to the supernatural stuff。 I don't mind it, I just wasn't expecting it so I was completely thrown off。 It also has quite a few characters/storylines that seemed random but this is my own fault for starting on book #16 in a series。 Definitely think I would've enjoyed this more if I had actually read them in order。 And as expected, it ends on a cliffhanger。 I'm not sure I care enough to read another in the series。 2。8⭐It started out really strong until it got to the supernatural stuff。 I don't mind it, I just wasn't expecting it so I was completely thrown off。 It also has quite a few characters/storylines that seemed random but this is my own fault for starting on book #16 in a series。 Definitely think I would've enjoyed this more if I had actually read them in order。 And as expected, it ends on a cliffhanger。 I'm not sure I care enough to read another in the series。 。。。more

John Connelly never disappoints。 I had read this book but had fallen away from the series。 I was reaquinting myself with my favorite characters。 Although, I love Charlie Parker, I can't help but enjoy Angel and Loius' dialogues and interactions。 They are a hoot, even when in the midst of chaos。 Love the drama but really enjoy the work Mr。 Connely puts in creating his work of fiction intwined in history。 Love it! This is a complicated story of a young woman who disappears after running away from a very mysterious character。 Those looking for her are on the darker side of life。 Charlie Parker is hired to find this woman's child, which leads him to the deep woods of Maine。 He discovers that he isn't the only one looking for this child and those others like to leave bodies along the way。 They are more interested in the gift the child was given and Parker is more interested in keeping the child safe。 This is a complicated story of a young woman who disappears after running away from a very mysterious character。 Those looking for her are on the darker side of life。 Charlie Parker is hired to find this woman's child, which leads him to the deep woods of Maine。 He discovers that he isn't the only one looking for this child and those others like to leave bodies along the way。 They are more interested in the gift the child was given and Parker is more interested in keeping the child safe。 。。。more

While I will admit this one didn't draw me in quite as completely as Game of Ghosts, it still lives up to John Connolly's usual excellent standards。 I won't go into details about the plot, but the central "item" featured in the book was very interesting, and we really don't learn much about it here, so I look forward to learning more in future books。I know the author has always said you don't have to have read other books in the series to enjoy any of them, but reading this one in isolation woul While I will admit this one didn't draw me in quite as completely as Game of Ghosts, it still lives up to John Connolly's usual excellent standards。 I won't go into details about the plot, but the central "item" featured in the book was very interesting, and we really don't learn much about it here, so I look forward to learning more in future books。I know the author has always said you don't have to have read other books in the series to enjoy any of them, but reading this one in isolation would leave you entertained but unsatisfied, to be sure, so if you're interested in the series, do yourself a favor and start from the beginning。 I envy anyone in that situation - you have an amazing journey ahead of you! 。。。more

Wow! This was an unexpected ride。 There’s a supernatural element to this story that I wasn’t anticipating but sure did make it an interesting tale。 Very good, from top to bottom!

I was at some disadvantage in reading this book, #16 in the Connolly’s series about private investigator Charlie Parker。 It was a gift, and as I hadn’t read any other books in the series, I wasn’t prepared for what seemed to me a strange, confusing, and sometimes seemingly ridiculous kind of Jo Nesbo/Stephen King/Michael Connolly/Dan Brown mashup。 There’s a duo of relentless and merciless killers (one with the ominous name of Mors, who warns one victim before his demise, as she takes a scalpel f I was at some disadvantage in reading this book, #16 in the Connolly’s series about private investigator Charlie Parker。 It was a gift, and as I hadn’t read any other books in the series, I wasn’t prepared for what seemed to me a strange, confusing, and sometimes seemingly ridiculous kind of Jo Nesbo/Stephen King/Michael Connolly/Dan Brown mashup。 There’s a duo of relentless and merciless killers (one with the ominous name of Mors, who warns one victim before his demise, as she takes a scalpel from her bag of tricks, “I’m afraid we’re going to make a mess”); a toy telephone that brings the voice of a woman long dead and buried to her confused and, resulting from these calls, terrified child; Charlie Parker himself, one of those men damaged physically, psychologically, and spiritually by their line of work with crime (a la Harry Bosch and others); and a powerful, shadowy group of men called the Backers in pursuit of, or following, the Buried God, whatever that is。 And let’s not forget the much sought-after Atlas with several mystical vellum pages with。。。well, I don’t even know what。 There are references in the story to incidents in Parker’s past, which isn’t necessarily a problem for the uninitiated in this one, and it ends with a teaser of what’s to come next, presumably in book #17, which is just a bit annoying。I can’t say I found all this entertaining exactly, but it was, I guess, diverting for a time。 However, I won’t be keeping this particular book on my shelves; it will be donated and hopefully found by someone with a much greater appreciation of this quirky take on genre and for this series。 。。。more
